Bar Stool Economics.!!!

Bar Stool Economics…!!!

Suppose that every day, ten men go out for beer and the bill for all
ten comes to $100. If they paid their bill the way we pay our taxes,
it would go something like this:

The first four men (the poorest) would pay nothing.
The fifth would pay $1.
The sixth would pay $3.
The seventh would pay $7.
The eighth would pay $12.
The ninth would pay $18.
The tenth man (the richest) would pay $59.

So, that's what they decided to do. The ten men drank in the bar
every day and seemed quite happy with the arrangement, until one day,
the owner threw them a curve. 'Since you are all such good customers,
he said, 'I'm going to reduce the cost of your daily beer by $20.
Drinks for the ten now cost just $80.

The group still wanted to pay their bill the way we pay our taxes so
the first four men were unaffected. They would still drink for free.
But what about the other six men - the paying customers? How could
they divide the $20 windfall so that everyone would get his 'fair
share?'

They realized that $20 divided by six is $3.33. But if they
subtracted that from everybody's share, then the fifth man and the
sixth man would each end up being paid to drink his beer. So, the bar
owner suggested that it would be fair to reduce each man's bill by
roughly the same amount, and he proceeded to work out the amounts
each should pay.

And so:

The fifth man, like the first four, now paid nothing (100% savings).
The sixth now paid $2 instead of $3 (33%savings) .
The seventh now pay $5 instead of $7 (28%savings) .
The eighth now paid $9 instead of $12 (25% savings).
The ninth now paid $14 instead of $18 (22% savings).
The tenth now paid $49 instead of $59 (16% savings).

Each of the six was better off than before. And the first four
continued to drink for free. But once outside the restaurant, the men
began to compare their savings.

'I only got a dollar out of the $20,'declared the sixth man. He
pointed to the tenth man,' but he got $10!'

'Yeah, that's right,' exclaimed the fifth man. 'I only saved a
dollar, too. It's unfair that he got ten times more than I!'

'That's true!!' shouted the seventh man. 'Why should he get $10 back
when I got only two? The wealthy get all the breaks!'

'Wait a minute,' yelled the first four men in unison. 'We didn't get
anything at all. The system exploits the poor!'

The nine men surrounded the tenth and beat him up.

The next night the tenth man didn't show up for drinks, so the nine
sat down and had beers without him. But when it came time to pay the
bill, they discovered something important. They didn't have enough
money between all of them for even half of the bill!

And that, boys and girls, journalists and college professors, is how
our tax system works. The people who pay the highest taxes get the
most benefit from a tax reduction. Tax them too much, attack them for
being wealthy, and they just may not show up anymore. In fact, they
might start drinking overseas where the atmosphere is somewhat
friendlier.

Do you think this is something to ponder up on…??

The aspect of your life is still spectacular...

It was raining heavily outside. Dark clouds gathered in the sky and nature was in its ominous best. I took a break from my work and went to the pantry to grab a cup of coffee. I had a sip and went near the window to see the rain pouring down heavily outside the glass structure. I was inside our huge office building, unruffled by even the fierceness of the nature. Through the heavy transparent glass, I could see a small girl trying to hold on to her umbrella which the wind was snatching away from her. I felt sorry for the girl, and was happy that I was not in a similar pathetic situation. Yes. I take pride for the fact that I am a software engineer. .. I have everything which a common man would envy; money, status, respect, you name it I have it. I always wanted to be software professional and here I am, working for one of the best firms in the world. But then, am I really happy? Now, I could see an imprint of my palm on the other glass window, through which I reminisced my past, basked in the warmth of the sun shine.

My childhood was so much of fun. I vividly remember those rainy days, when I hugged my mother tightly during sleeping listening to all the stories told by her. Now, I have a big house here, but then it is just a house, not a home. My parents are pretty far away from me now. I have a cell phone to talk to them everyday, but then I really miss those dinners which I had with my family everyday. I could easily afford to taste all the   different cuisines these days, but the best of food there, lack the love and affection which is present in the food prepared by my mother.

I threw a lavish party for my colleagues for my birthday, but then they would never replace the birthdays when my friends secretly brought a cake and at the end, half of the cake would have ended up on my face. The couple of hundred bucks that u save for a long period just to give a treat to your friends in the road side chat shop can never give the pleasure even after spending a few thousand bucks these days.

The scene of me crying and refusing to have dinner on the day when I fought with my best friend came to my mind. Today, she has gone far away from me, taking away my love and with it my life, but I am sitting and coding here with a false smile on my face. Everyday I meet new people, but then I long ceased to make a new friend.

It's true that I have a lot of things now. I have a nice bed, but no time to sleep. Lots of money, but no friends to spend it with. The latest designer clothes, but a worn out body. Quite a few to flirt, but no one to love. Awards for technical excellence, but no reward for the crave for peaceful ambience. A confident demeanor, but a reluctant and apathetic mind. Full of rain, but no sunshine even in the farthest distance.

Now, I could see the small girl on the road enjoying in the rain with her umbrella firmly in her grip. She might not have all the comforts which I have, but then she has the innocence and fun which I lost a long time back. I have decided to come out of this false fantasy, even if it is at the expense of losing the tap of the software engineer. I am going to again enjoy my life. I am going to go out in the rain and play with the small kid now. I removed my tie, and went near my computer to shut it down. Just then, I saw a new mail alert in my mail box. I slowly opened outlook and I found a message from my manager with an attachment saying that there was a critical defect in the code and I have to fix it soon. I convinced myself that I am not going to get bogged down again by these pressures and stick to my decision. I ignored the mail and went to the rest room. After a couple of minutes, the software engineer in me came out, his shirt tucked in with the perfect tie knot, sat before the computer, and started typing,

XYZ,
I am looking into the defect and will send the patch files before EOD.

The end of romance....???

The end of romance…???

I love you!

They're all saying it these days --
in schools and colleges,
in parks and restaurants,
at workplaces and in bedrooms,
over the phone and through the e-mail.
They first say it as a declaration,
 then as an assurance.

Even people who normally don't converse in English,
when it comes to expressing this primary emotion,
prefer 'I love you' to its vernacular equivalent.
Just as the way it happens in the movies:
the hero or the heroine will flirt in the regional language,
 but the flirtation usually culminates
with the mouthing of the inevitable
 'I love you.'

But when people say ‘I love you' to each other,
 what exactly do they mean?
That they want to get married?
That they find each other irresistible?
Or is it an expression of affection or admiration?
Or an unstated agreement to have sex?
No one knows.

The answer is bound to be as
complicated as the definition of love.

But one thing is certain.

Ten years ago, when you said 'I love you',
no matter what you meant by that,
it was taken not only as a declaration
of love but also of commitment.
It was sacred as a vow.
And you usually said it only once in your lifetime --
to the person who eventually became your spouse.
And the pleasure of saying it was similar
to using a smuggled French perfume.

Today, you can get the same perfume
in the neighbourhood departmental store.
Similarly, 'I love you' is now a free commodity.

" Today,
'
I love you' no longer means
you are the only one I love.
It is only an expression of feeling,"
says psychiatrist

"People are in a great hurry to fall in love.
Having an affair has become a status symbol,
 especially on campuses.''

So today, people are falling in love
 more often than ever before.
And not just with one person.
Today you might be in love with someone,
but you are free to walk out if the relationship is
stifling and fall in love with someone else.
Unlike the days of the past
when only death could do you apart.

Does that mean the present generation
is less sincere when it says 'I love you'?
I doesn't think so.
 "
They no longer say it to express a commitment.
I believe they mean it when they say it,"

Perhaps, with culture and tradition,
 relationships have become flexible too.
Take the case of my friend journalist
who relocated in metro a year ago.
 Friendless in a new city,
he took to the Internet chatrooms.
There he met Girl, 18, a student of College.
They fell in love even before they met;
and when they met,
 a passionate affair began.
But in less than six months,
she was gone, after having
declared her love a million times.

"I think she grew out of the relationship.
But when she used to tell me 'I love you',
I could see she meant every bit of it,"
 says my friend journalist,

who nursed a broken heart for a
while before moving on -- to other women, of course.
Today, both speak on the phone occasionally,
 like "good friends."
Sounds like a filmi divorce story!

But that's how it happens these days,
except in films where the girl and
the boy fall in love and live happily ever after.

"Rarely do we see a love affair culminating in marriage.
Often we find that the victim of an
unsuccessful affair soon gets into another one,''

I views this casual attitude of today's youth as a dangerous trend.
 "
When one runs from one relationship to another,
it becomes a character trait,
only to be continued in future,''

So where does this leave love?
my another friend said,
''The word love means nothing to me at the moment,"
"But I know when I meet my knight in shining armour,
then it will have a lot of significance.
At this point in time, if someone said it to me,
 I would not believe him."

Why not?
The answer is simple --
'I love you' is no longer the smuggled French perfume.
Say it to any woman today and
 she's unlikely to be impressed
Instead, she's likely to turn back and ask:
"How many people you have said this to before?"

In any case,
no one falls in love with a
Tom, Dick or Harry these days

-- something that still happens in movies,

where a autorickshaw driver wins

the heart of a millionaire's daughter.
 In real life,
 it's among equals (something that
the strict father of the erring heroine
is looking for when pushing her
into a room and locking her up).

we sees this as a natural phenomenon.
"By and large, we are drawn to people
who are compatible,
who we can relate to.
That's the in-built safety mechanism love has.
Unless it is an act of rebellion,"

So you fall in love with and marry
 someone compatible.

After that what?

"As long as you are in love minus the responsibilities,
 you are crazy about it.
Once married, the colours start fading.
Moreover,
 where is the time
for romance after you have a child?"

one women who, 17 years ago,
fought with her parents parents
and threatened them with dire consequences
if they objected to her marrying the man of her choice.
"Now when I think of all those things,
it seems so crazy,'' she says.

Is it really worth falling in love?
For that, we have to first define love.
And that's not as easy as saying,
 I love you.

The Talmud, ThePriest & the Rabbi....

Priest meets his friend, the Rabbi, and says to him "You have taught me
many things but there is one thing in particular I want to learn very
much but you do not wish to teach it to me. I want you to teach me the Talmud
."

The Rabbi replied: "You are a Non-Jew and you have the brain of a
Non-Jew. There is no chance that you will succeed in understanding the Talmud."

But the Priest continued in his attempt to persuade the Rabbi to teach
him the Talmud.

Finally, the Rabbi agreed. The Rabbi then said to the Priest: "I agree to
teach you the Talmud on condition that you answer one question."

The Priest agreed and asked the Rabbi, "What is the question?"

The Rabbi then said to the Priest: "Two men fall down through the
chimney; one comes out dirty and the other comes out clean. Who of  those
two goes to wash up?"

Very Simple," replied the Priest. "The one who is dirty goes to wash up
but the one who is clean does not go to wash up."

The Rabbi then said to the Priest: "I told you that you will not succeed
in understanding the Talmud. The exact opposite happened. The clean one
looks at the dirty one and thinks that he is also dirty, goes to wash
up. The dirty one, on the other hand, looks at the clean one and thinks
that he is also clean and, therefore, does not go to wash up."

The Priest then says to the Rabbi: "This I did not think of. Ask me,
please, another question."

The Rabbi then says to the Priest: "Two men fall down through the
chimney. One comes out dirty and the other comes out clean. Who of these
two goes to wash up?"

The Priest then says to the Rabbi: "Very simple. The clean one looks at
the dirty one and thinks he is also dirty and goes to wash up. The  dirty
one on the other hand, looks at the clean one and thinks that he is also
clean and, therefore, does not go to wash up."

The Rabbi then says to the Priest: "You are wrong again. I told you that
you will not understand. The clean one looks into the mirror, sees that
he is clean and, therefore, does not go to wash up. The dirty one looks
into the mirror, sees that he is dirty and goes to wash up."

The Priest complains to the Rabbi "But you did not tell me that there is
a mirror there."

The Rabbi then tells the Priest: "I told you. You are a Non-Jew; with
your brain you will not succeed in understanding the Talmud. According
to the Talmud, you have to think of all the possibilities. "

"Alright," groaning, said the Priest to the Rabbi. "Let us try once more.
Ask me one more question."

For the last time, said the Rabbi to the Priest. "Two men fall through the
chimney. One came out dirty and the other came out clean. Who of these
two went to wash up?"

"That is very simple!" replied the Priest. "If there is no mirror there
the clean one will look at the dirty one and will think that he is also
dirty and will, therefore, go to wash up. The dirty one will look at the
clean one and will think that he is also clean, and will, therefore, not
go to wash up. If there is a mirror there, the clean one will look into
the mirror and will, therefore, not go to wash up. The dirty one will
look into the mirror and will see that he is dirty and will, therefore, go to wash up.

The Rabbi then says to the Priest: "I told you that you would not
succeed in understanding. You are a Non-Jew; you have a Non-Jew brain.
Tell me, how is it possible for two men to fall through a chimney and
for one to come out dirty and the other to come out clean?"

[And finally for people wondering whats Talmud:

The Talmud  is a record of rabbinic discussions pertaining to Jewish law, ethics, customs, and history.]

20 Key Ideas for a Happy Marriage.

20 Key Ideas for a Happy Marriage...

1.  Keep your mind on your main goal, which is to have a happy marriage. Say and do what will enable you and your spouse to have a happy marriage. Avoid the opposite. Everything else is commentary.

2.  Keep asking yourselves, What can we do to have a happy, loving atmosphere in our home?

3.  Focus on giving, rather than taking. Say and do as many things as possible to meet your spouses needs.

4.  Keep doing and saying things that will give your spouse a sense of importance.

5.  Frequently ask yourself, What positive things can I say and do to put my (husband or wife) in a positive emotional state?

6.  Before speaking, clarify the outcome you want. The meaning of your communication is the response you actually get. If the first thing you say is not achieving your goal, change your approach. Remember that mutual respect and happiness is your real goal. Do not needlessly argue. Silence is often the wisest choice. Constantly be mutually respectful.
.

7.  Show appreciation and gratitude in as many ways as possible. Say something appreciative a few times a day.

8.  Be a good listener. Understand your spouse from his or her point of view.

9.  Be considerate of the feelings and needs of your spouse. Think of ways that you have lacked consideration and be resolved to increase your level of consideration.

10.  Instead of blaming and complaining think of positive ways to motivate your spouse. If your first strategies are not effective, think of creative ways.
.
11.  Give up unrealistic expectations. Do not expect your spouse to be perfect and do not make comparisons.

12.  Do not cause pain with words. If your spouse speaks to you in ways that cause you pain, choose outcome wording, Lets speak to each other in ways that are mutually respectful.

13.  Be willing to compromise. Be willing to do something you would rather not do in return for similar behavior from your spouse.

14.  Write a list of ways that you have benefited from being married to your spouse. Keep adding to the list and reread it frequently
.

15.  Write a list of your spouses positive patterns and qualities. Keep adding to the list and read it frequently
.

16.  Keep thinking about what you can do to bring out the best qualities of your spouse. Reinforce those qualities with words and action
.

17.  Focus on finding solutions to any problems that arise. Be solution oriented. Do not just blame and complain. Do not focus on who is more wrong. For a happy marriage, work together to find mutually acceptable solutions
.

18.  Remember your finest moments. What did you say and do when you felt best about each other? Increase them
.

19.  Look for positive activities you can do together
.

20.  Live in the present. What went wrong in the past is the past. You create the present and future with your thoughts, words, and actions right now. Choose them wisely.

The Tale Of A Date.!!!

She is my first and the only love till this point. Her name is Nivedita, a software engineer by profession. She is turning twenty-four shortly and she is undoubtedly the most beautiful girl on earth. I made it a point to share my feelings today with her, hoping this letter would do it all. I have not written any letters in my life till now, and this is perhaps the first time I pen down my thoughts and expectations for the person I love the most on earth.

It's been four years since we met each other and a strong bond has grown between us through these years. I was unaware of her love for a long time. In fact, I hadn't spoken a word with her till about a year I had seen her for the first time. It was in one long journey in train, I understood her love for me. It happened a year ago.

It was a trip from Kanyakumari to Chennai in Kanyakumari Express. We had passed Vizhupuram and it was 3 am in the morning. I thought I was the only one who was awake in the whole compartment in that early hour. But to my surprise, she was also awake.

I didn't know then that it was for me she had got up that early. Hardly had she seemed to move her sight away from me. She smiled at me very often and every time I encountered that cute smile, I started eagerly awaiting the next battle with her smile and shining eyes. Her smile had everything in it, the story of unbelievable affection, care and what not.

From that moment, till now, I too have loved her to a great extent. We have never exchanged words about the love we have towards each other, but words are too less to reflect the amount of affection and love we share. I have always thought that the love would remain throughout our life and it happened to be the same till three months back.

Vivek had come into my life three months back. In fact I myself had waited his arrival for quite a long time, but from the moment he arrived, he has been the worst enemy in my life. Nivedita and he had grown close over times, and the fraction of time she spent with me got lowered to a great extent. Even the latest Sensex fall would be less compared to the fall in her affection for me.

I have wondered how it could suddenly happen, after near to four long years of understanding and love amidst us. At times, I have felt like killing that guy Vivek, but I have not had that much strength or braveness to do that. Still, what can he do? He did no mistake to his part, except for being born charming, cute and fair.
Two days before when I saw her, she was feeding food for him and I was hurt to the core on seeing the incident. My anger had boiled down to tears, and I broke. It took almost close to three hours for me stop crying, I felt I had cried more than how much I would have cried when I was born.

I have been trying to understand where it all went wrong, but to my fortune, till now, I haven't been able spot it out. Once for all, I decided to tell all my feelings to her, no matter how she is going to deal with it. I have heard my dad saying a lot of times 'Something is better than nothing!' and I made up my mind to do 'something'.

I fixed today to be the 'DATE' for throwing open in front of her the 'TALE' of my pure love for her. I don't know whether I will get a positive response from her, but I pray God that only the best happens.

Trrrrriinnnnnnggggg...

My school bell has rung. The lunch break is over. My 'UKG' classmates would be ready to welcome me with the same cute smile as ever.
I hope my 'MOTHER' Nivedita will be alright, understands me and shares some time with me also, apart from that she spends with my three months old rascal 'BROTHER' Vivek.

See you after a break!!!

With Love,
Deepak UKG-B

Mgmt/ Four Hats for Success...!!!

Four Hats for Success…!!!!

In any business there must be four hats worn each day. Your company
could consist of just you, the owner and operator, or it could
consist of over 2,000 employees. By managing these four hats, you
will increase revenue through efficiency and decrease costs by
eliminating waste and disorganization.

1. The Captain (General Manager/Owner). The Captain oversees,
delegates and organizes. Captains are individuals usually known as
the General Manager. They see the broader picture and make sure the
smaller jobs are done: bills are paid, files are organized, the
accounts receivable are up to date, etc. They do not actually do the
small task jobs, they make sure the jobs are fulfilled and the
company runs smoothly. It is also necessary that they step back to
notice and acknowledge the company's short and long term goals.

2. Deck Support (Office Assistant). Deck Support makes sure the
small details are done. This hat is usually worn by employees such
as the office assistant, the runner and/or the logistics person.
They complete small-detail tasks such as filing, data entry, paying
bills and making sure the office is clean and organized. This person
will report to the Captain.

3. The Technician (Worker). The Technician makes and installs the
windows, installs the computers or cleans the carpets. The
Technician gets the product to the consumer so that money can be
collected.

4. The Dreamer (Entrepreneur). The Dreamer can't sleep nights
because they are imagining how great things will be. Dreamers are
the visionaries of the company and dream about logos, expansion,
fulfillment, money, power, fun and energy.
All of these jobs are very important. When a company loses its
Captain, it runs into an iceberg and drowns. With no Deck Support,
things get lost and the company crashes. Without a Technician, no
product is delivered; thus no revenue. If a company loses its
Dreamer the company's vision is lost and the company experiences a
slow death.

If hats are worn by employees other than the General Manager, the
Captain needs to hold the employee accountable to staying on task
and completing the job. The General Manager also needs to hold the
Captain accountable to receive appropriate information and complete
necessary tasks.

A ship cannot run without a crew. Although the hats and tasks are
separate and different, it is imperative to hold a weekly staff
meeting to stay on the same page. Nothing hurts a company faster
than the right hand not knowing what the left hand is doing; having
hats sprawled all over the place and getting lost. Staff meetings
can be rewarding when they are consistent and will result in your
company's progress.

The human mind can get confused easily. The unconscious can only
attend to about five tasks at once so juggling four hats is a skill
that needs to be developed. Do this by separating the four hats in
your mind. Realize and recognize which hat you are wearing and focus
on the job that you are doing. Be clear in your mind what task you
are completing and consciously switch your hat when needed.
The Captain needs to assess when each hat needs to be worn and when.
Sometimes the Captain's hat will take all day and the Dreamer's hat
is saved for the weekend. It may be that the Technician hat is not
worn for a few weeks until a job needs to be completed.

This expertise is valuable and becomes more thorough when the
Captain steps back and looks at the whole company from a broader
perspective.

Each hat is fulfilling and rewarding in its own way. Take
satisfaction in tasks well done, keep your hats in order and enjoy
smooth sailing!

Why mothers are special....???

Why mothers are special….???

Mum and Dad were watching TV when Mum said, 'I'm tired, and it's getting late. I think I'll go to bed.'
She went to the kitchen to make sandwiches for the next day's
lunches. Rinsed out the popcorn bowls, took meat out of the
freezer for supper the following evening, checked the cereal box
levels, filled the sugar container, put spoons and bowls on the
table and started the coffee pot for brewing the next morning.
She then put some wet clothes in the dryer, put a load of clothes
into the washer, ironed a shirt and secured a loose button. She
picked up the game pieces left on the table, put the phone back
On the charger and put the telephone book into the drawer. She
watered the plants, emptied a wastebasket and hung up a towel to
dry. She yawned and stretched and headed for the bedroom.
She stopped by the desk and wrote a note to the teacher,
counted out some cash for the excursion and pulled a text book
out from hiding under the chair. She signed a birthday card for a
friend, addressed and stamped the envelope and wrote a quick
note for the  grocery store. She put both near her bag.

Mum then washed her face with 3 in 1 cleanser, put on her Night
Solution & age fighting moisturizer, brushed and flossed her
teeth and filed her nails.

Dad called out, 'I thought you were going to bed.'

'I'm on my way,' she said. She put some water into the dog's dish
and put the cat outside, then made sure the doors were locked
and the patio light was on. She looked in on each of the kids and
turned out their bedside lamps and radios, hung up a shirt, threw
some dirty socks into the hamper, and had a brief conversation
with the one up still doing homework.

In her own room, she set the alarm; laid out clothing for the next
day, straightened up the shoe rack. She added three things to
her 6 most important things to do list. She said her prayers, and
visualized the accomplishment of her goals. About that time, Dad
turned off the TV and announced to no one in particular. 'I'm
going to bed.' And he did...without another thought.

Anything extraordinary here? Wonder why women live longer...?

'CAUSE THEY ARE MADE FOR THE LONG HAUL....

and they can't die sooner, they still have things to do!!!!

I guess now you know why women are so special :).....!!!

Subject: Masters of the Modern Art...!!!

It’s almost impossible to talk about modern art without tipping your hat to these greats. Here are the masters who gave birth to the modern.

Pablo Picasso (1881 – 1973)

Picasso is the undisputed master of the modern movement. You have to go back to Michelangelo to find anyone of equal genius or stature. Convivial and energetic, he had a voracious appetite for the female sex, although his relationships with women were not always happy.

Creator of a vast output of work, he was equally inventive as a painter, sculptor, printmaker, ceramicists, and theater designer. His work displays a bewildering change of technical and stylistic originality with a wide-ranging Freudian response to the human condition, including many intimate references to sex and death, sometimes blissful, sometimes anguished.

Always highly autobiographical, Picasso had the rare ability to turn self-comment into universal truths about mankind.

Henri Matisse (1869 – 1954)

Matisse was the king of color and celebrated the joy of living through the exploration of his palette. One of the founders of the modern movement, Matisse achieved a joyous combination of subject matter (notably the open window, the still life, and the female nude) and a glorious exploitation of color, and proclaimed a new freedom to do his own thing without necessarily imitating nature. Matisse explored color independently from subject matter and turned color into something you wanted to touch and feel.

While he was at his best with paint and paper cutouts, he was also a brilliant and innovative printmaker and a gifted sculptor. As a personality however, he was professorial, social, but a bit of a loner.

Wassily Kandinsky (1866 – 1944)

Kandinsky was one of the key pioneers of the modern movement and reputedly the creator of the first abstract picture. Russian born, he initially trained as a lawyer, which made him at ease with abstract modes of thought.

Possessor of a complex, multifaceted personality, Kandinsky cultivated an intellectual rather than an instinctive approach to art, backed up by much theoretical writing. Starting as a figurative artist, he worked his way via freely painted abstracts to a complex geometrical form of abstraction.

The common thread in all his work is color. He intellectualized his ideas and his art, but at the same time he had such a strong physical sensitivity to color that he could literally hear colors as well as see them (a phenomenon known as synesthesia)

How to Make Decisions: Six Hats Thinking...!!!

How to Make Decisions: Six Hats Thinking...!!!

The Six Hats Thinking technique enables you to break out of your
habitual thinking style and make better quality decisions. Six Hats
Thinking was created by Edward De Bono with the aim of looking at
the effect of a decision from a number of important, different
perspectives, and modifying your decision accordingly. This decision
making approach can be successfully used individually or in a group.

In short, you consider the effect of a decision by wearing
six "hats", and in turn, articulating the aspirations and concerns
of each group.

White Hat
This is the data hat, where you consider facts, figures and
information, identify any gaps in your knowledge and either fill or
acknowledge them. For example, you use historical data or case
studies to predict future behaviour, or do a cost benefit analysis.

Red Hat
This is the emotional hat, where intuition, instinct and irrational
responses are considered.

Black Hat
Is the negative, pessimistic, "the world is going to end" hat. This
viewpoint is useful as flaws and assumptions can be flushed out and
addressed, and contingency plans prepared.

Yellow Hat
Is the polar opposite of the black hat, where optimism prevails.
This is where benefits and added value are considered.

Green Hat
The Green Hat is used to put some creativity into the process. What
other options exist? Is there a trickier, smarter solution?

Blue Hat
Is the hat worn by the person facilitating the decision making
process, ensuring each hat is worn in turn and gets a fair amount of
air-time.

Here's an example of how Six Hats Thinking can be used.

A small training company are deciding on whether to deliver online
training. This is new territory for them as they have historically
only done face to face training. However, they need to grow the
business and think this is what customers want.

White Hat Thinking
The team look at their finances and see face to face training
numbers are generally stagnant, and declining for some courses.
Feedback from customers suggest a growing proportion would prefer a
training solution that could be delivered "on demand", wherever and
whenever the trainee requires. There are already a considerable
number of successful training companies with an online presence.

Red Hat Thinking
The team are nervous about their lack of experience in managing
online training. They are concerned their roles will change into
being technical support and no longer doing what they enjoy or are
good at.

Black Hat Thinking
Black hat thinking flushes out concerns about the cost and
complexity of building a website and creating an online training
platform, particularly if not all courses are suited to an online
environment. Also, how does this project fit with existing workload?

Yellow Hat Thinking
Yellow hat thinking frees the team up to believe that in a year's
time they will be wondering what they were worried about. They break
the project up into manageable chunks, with agreed deadlines and
deliverables. They realise that if all goes to plan, there may be a
new market in turning other companies training from off-line into on-
line training.

Green Hat Thinking
Spending some time wearing the green hat makes the team consider
other ways to deliver training, both off and on-line. They create
two different training solutions which they had not previously
considered.

Blue Hat Thinking
Throughout the discussion, one person wears the blue hat, ensuring
no thinking style dominates or colours the others.

Six Hats Thinking forces you to consider many different perspectives
when making a decision, and break out of your habitual thinking
style. This technique is particularly useful for both newly formed,
or established teams, as there is a transparent decision making
process to be followed
